Requirements for Membership

Who Can Become a Freemason?

Freemasonry welcomes men who are of good character, believe in a Supreme Being, and wish to develop themselves through fellowship, moral principles, charitable service and personal growth.
While the precise requirements for membership are governed by the applicable Constitution and Regulations, there are five fundamental principles that prospective candidates should understand.

1. Be a man of good character and reputation

Under the Scottish Constitution, Freemasonry is a fraternity for men. A prospective candidate must be of good character, enjoy a sound reputation, and be considered suitable for membership.
Freemasonry places great importance on integrity, honesty and personal conduct. Members are expected to uphold the principles of the Craft and contribute positively to their families, their communities and society.

2. Believe in a Supreme Being

A belief in a Supreme Being is an essential requirement for membership under the Scottish Constitution. Freemasonry is not a religion and does not prescribe a particular faith or form of worship.
Men of different religious traditions may become Freemasons, provided they meet the applicable requirements. Freemasonry respects the individual religious convictions of its members and does not seek to replace their faith or interfere with their religious obligations.

3. Be able to meet your personal and family responsibilities

A prospective candidate should be in a position to meet his existing financial and personal responsibilities and to make a considered commitment to Freemasonry.
Membership involves time, participation and certain financial obligations. A man should join for the right reasons, with the understanding that his responsibilities to his family, his livelihood and his faith must continue to receive appropriate priority.
Freemasonry is not a means of obtaining financial assistance or personal material advantage.

4. Meet the minimum age requirement

Under the applicable membership rules, a prospective candidate must meet the prescribed minimum age requirement. For this District, the minimum age is generally 21 years, subject to the relevant Scottish Constitution and Regulations.
Prospective candidates who are unsure whether they meet the age requirement are welcome to contact the District for clarification.

5. Come of your own free will and accord

Freemasonry is a personal choice. A man must approach the Craft of his own free will, without coercion, pressure or improper inducement from another person.
Freemasonry does not seek to compel anyone to join. A prospective candidate should have a genuine interest in the principles and aims of the Craft and should make his own informed decision about pursuing membership.
